This sweet kid looked like he’d lost his very best friend. NYers and living in Miami where transplants are everywhere, it always hit close to home. September 2001, and like many 17-year-olds, my thought pattern at that point was a shallow, never-ending cycle of guitars, girls, football, my car, etc. Abraham Lincoln’s that brought to mind the families of 9/11 victims and first responders sickened by their work at Ground Zero.

It also happened to be when the city had put up those Twin Lights for the first time as a memorial where the towers once stood. Mementos hanging on make-shift fences and memorial walls were heart-wrenching. There were more than a few times that I had to wipe tears from my eyes. The 3,000 killed on 9/11 were innocent civilians or uniformed police and fire officers trying to help save lives.

U.S. May End Some Taxes on Overseas Profits

The Treasury is weighing a proposal to eliminate some, but not all, of the taxes on overseas profits of U.S.-based companies, the Wall Street Journal reported on Saturday, citing two people familiar with the deliberations.

Eliminating the taxes on some of the profits is a central element of the Obama administration’s broader plans to overhaul the corporate tax code, the newspaper said.

Business have long complained that the U.S. system of taxing companies’ overseas profits hits companies that have often already paid been taxed in the countries where the profits were earned.

Read the whole thing here. The US is one of the few countries that tax overseas profits. Eliminating or greatly reducing the burden could prompt countries to repatriate billions in profits locked overseas. Just two years ago, the Obama Administration was trying to RAISE these taxes. So, progress.

Now for the second part of the story. Several weeks passed, that turned into months, and still no check. He and his family tried to contact the company that was supposed to pay out, Par 3 Fun Stop, with no luck.

KARE 11 spoke last week with the company’s owner, John Schierman of Chaska, by phone who first told us there would be no check. According to Schierman, the Hole-Official never saw that hole-in-one and wouldn’t sign an affidavit saying she did. Though he wouldn’t give us her name, we found her.
p

“I was freaking out with the whole family. I was very excited for him. It was very cooll. I’ve never seen anybody hit a hole-in-one before, so it was cool,” said Herman.
p

Taylor is a golfer from Sarasota, Florida who also nabbed a hole-in-one at tournament with Par 3 Fun Stop. She was supposed to collect $2,500 for her shot, but same story, no check.
p

“Our Mystic Creek Club started doing some checking, our pro there, and they couldn’t get any answers either, so at that point, we knew there was a problem,” said Taylor.
p

Par 3 Fun Stop has been operating in Florida earlier in 2011. A former employee tells KARE 11 there is another $2,500 unpaid hole-in-one winner, as well as other smaller prizes, that people never received. So, we went back to John Schierman to get more answers.
p

“You were telling these people that they had to sign an affidavit and clearly there was no affidavit necessary,” we say to him. “You know what? That was to buy time. Okay? That’s all it was, to buy time,” says Schierman.
p

Schierman also admitted he never had hole-in-one insurance, not in Minnesota, not in Florida, but says no one ever asked. He also acknowledged that Andrew aced the hole at Majestic Oaks and that he had every intention of paying…eventually.
p

“What I understand is that this all kind of snowballed on you. Is that fair enough to say?” we ask. “Amen. You know what? What I told you earlier is true. When I talked to my mother and she said you screwed up. If you would have told them at any point, give me until October 15, maybe they wouldn’t have gone to the press,” said Schierman.
p

Why October 15th? He wouldn’t say. We asked John Schierman to do an on-camera interview and he agreed, but when the time came Tuesday morning, he didn’t show.
p

We called to remind him and he responded with a text saying he had gotten a new job, that he forgot to call and that maybe he would do the interview in a couple weeks.

Zillow, with Postlets traffic, sees boost in unique viewers

Unique visitors are a common way websites measure popularity, and the count is frequently used to tout a site’s effectiveness to advertisers and investors. The growth of Zillow’s unique visitors is significant, since Zillow draws revenue from online advertising, as well as subscriptions sold to real estate agents.

Zillow’s 25.1 million unique visitors in August was more than double the nearly 12.5 million unique visitors the company recorded 12 months ago. In January 2009, Zillow had about 7.5 million unique visitors.

Zillow saw a dip in unique visitors in June, but unique visitors rebounded in July when Zillow said it started adding traffic from Postlets because it recently finished integrating Postlets’ traffic into web analytics company Omniture’s analytical tools.

It’s hard to tell the exact impact Postlets is having on Zillow’s traffic because the unique visitor traffic often fluctuate from month to month. But in June — a month prior to Zillow integrating Postlets traffic — Zillow’s had about 20.9 million unique visitors (down from May’s count of 22 million).

In July, the first month Zillow said it was counting the Postlets traffic. Zillow said it saw about 23.2 million unique visitors, an increase of about 2.3 million unique visitors.

Fresh from Zillow’s successful public offering last month, the Seattle real estate site posted a big jump in revenue and a profit for the second quarter of 2011.

As a trouble shooter supplyer for major corporations, we reviewed many industry and technology publications. In 1992, we came across an article in a computer source periodical that had an article about the Maquiladora factory program in Mexico. It showed how a company could move their production there. One of several options was to just pay contractors to do all the work which included the factory site itself at a low hourly rate. This in itself was tragic. However, we found out more about our government part in the process. The U.S. Federal Government sponsored the moving of factories outside of the USA starting in 1956. This was the same year when the Suez Canal crisis exposed a serious international money crisis.

By 1992, prior to the passing of the free trade agreements, more than 2,000 factories were moved to Mexico. In 1994, President Clinton following the programs designed by the elder President Bush, steered a Democratic controlled congress to pass both NAFTA and GATT trade agreements. He forced the passing of GATT in a lame duck session of Congress after the – Contract with America Republicans – won office and were ready to take over in January.

After NAFTA and GATT were passed the number of factories moved to Mexico, quickly doubled to more than 4,000. Soon after that, President Clinton had to bail out the Mexican peso and the Mexican economy. Congress would give him only twenty billion dollars but he said he would find more money sources in the international financial community.

So the first economic stimulus program went to a foreign nation and proved that free trade was a failure from the start. President Bush, the second, took over and hid our economic crisis behind his shock and awe wars. He did this while pushing for more free trade agreements and fast track legislation. American workers were openly betrayed.

During the debate about a new economic stimulus package towards the end of President Bush’s time in office, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke told Congress that the best way to use the stimulus money was to buy ” domestically produced goods.” The major news channels ignore this remark while our economies based on making money on money instead of making things was burning out. President Obama took over and acted as if there was only one major party in America that should be called the Globalist Free Trader party. He bailed out the banks and the financial communities that caused most of the problems and put them back in charge. He did this while ignoring the severe suffering of the unemployed and underemployed. He did nothing for them. He married big money to big government instead. Now as we wait for the next big economic bubble to burst, the suffering of the working poor and jobless continue.
